LEGAL ISSUES FOR CONSUMERS
TIPS FOR HIRING A CONTRACTOR
-
Hire only licensed
contractors.
-
Check the contractor’s
state Registration and Professional Building Contractor license status.
-
Check references.
-
Get a written contract
and don’t sign anything until you fully understand the terms.
-
Do not agree to
deposits greater than 10% or $1,000, whichever is less.
-
Do not pay in cash and
keep good records of all payments.
-
Maintain a file of all
transactions for services and goods.
DON’T GET SCAMMED!
The Idaho Contractor License Review Board warns consumers to be wary of
those unscrupulous people who take advantage of homeowners with various
painting, roofing, and paving scams. These scams often target those most
vulnerable, such as the elderly or recent immigrants. The perpetrators are
gone within hours, leaving consumers without recourse or redress.
Warning Signs:
-
Door-to-door canvassing
of neighborhoods selling “leftover materials” at a cheap price.
-
Salespeople that use
high-pressure or scare tactics.
-
Companies that use P.O.
Boxes without street addresses or do not have a local telephone number.
-
Companies that offer free inspections and then offer to fix the
“problems” they find.
-
Contractors that demand payment in cash or payment in advance.
-
Companies or contractors that do not provide a written contract,
job references or proof of licensure and registration with the
state.
